I can't tell very well what's important anymore, the one thing I knew being removed. So I'll fall on some technical notes for the moment: looking at "Sound in, Sound out" as a category in which to stick things I can see my recent 8085 programs as falling in the periphery, and more importantly pointing to the middle. Paul Berg's PILE seems so too, even if he didn't act on any apprehension of the possible fact (the RNG he wrote so many routines based around is "Noise in" after all.). With "Noise in" as the in of "Sound in, Sound out" I've mostly been looking for nice separations and mixtures: distilling essences in an ideal space at odds with the basis handed in. to this end:

2nd: was thinking of how uniform distributions add to make triangular ones and then on to normal curves. and that it'd be useful to have a more concrete, perhaps geometric understanding, first thought in the 99cent store's exit queue, close to the front, with someone's xeroxed handout on Xenakis' probability distributions I found in a french copy of Musiques Formelles in my pocket, 2nd thought last night, and followed by a few drawings of rotating direct and retrograde copies of integer lists against one another. not sure yet what sense the drawings make, but the basics are reproduced above.

2ndy2nd: Then, this morning looking at ways irregularites are separated, mixed and compounded in the casting of the I Ching, I noticed the rotation of direct modulo sequences against one another to manipulate distrtibutions. (that's how we see first the 1:4 distribution, and then 1:1 -- a little rotation). [I wonder now if I could describe these things as convolutions as they look so similar to that other shifting and combining of direct and retrograde sequences.]

So. having made this little mess, I'm not any happier, but I have something to think about on the BART ride I'm treating myself to the instant after this post goes up

First Day Off in a while it seems. I'm back in Albany, and eating the old foods: flakes with honey, puffs with dates -- a real taste

got a little better today

two years ago or so I found the instructive value of eating doritios. They taught me to pay attention to the position of food in my mouth as I'm eating it, and to notice the boundary at which I lose the individual pieces. Today I picked up a plate of meal remains I would never have chosen myself - a tortilla that had formerly housed a breakfast burrito, hashbrown nuggets with cheddar cheese, fragments of 2 scones, one cranberry, one plain, salsa, and some tiny bits of wet-ish bacon. the tastes were sort of rubbing on each other, and I started making more rubs, pickgin up salsa with the plain scone. Eating this I thought of Buddhist monks who before eating whatever is given them, mix all their gifts together, and tried it too. I'd always thought of the monk's practice as a sort of sense-mortification, to learn to not care somehow, but it had a quite different function for me. I was very much in my senses, and checking out the whole landscape of possibilities evenly. It could be also a monk's goal here too. I'm happy that at least that prescription of theirs might only be the physical injunction with the theoretic support removed for us to use as best we can. It's a new view of pedagogy I've had just recently. prior I've always been stuck on the theoretic aspect almost exclusively, being bored with reality somehow, or trying to skip it-- which is the most nonsensical behavior I can imagine now.

Yesterday I was watching some ants, very briefly, and thought oh, it's strange that I think I know that all worker ants are female, something unverifiable by watching, but that I don't know many other more fascinating (to me (the all female workers thing doesn't even mean anything!) ) and harder to codify things that I'd notice first if I'd just watch the ants. so I really don't know ANYTHING. so my education starts now as fast as I can start being how I want.

Today we admire the thick walls attributed to the ancients' sense of propriety and silence, but are unable to build in their proportion. But we are able as ever they were. Most of them were like most of us, but some with deepened rhythms moved in ways that reach us now, and them only we call the ancients.

I imagine tumbling down a steep hill, in a sporting event, and still moving some volitionally also, and hoping my little movements will communicate to the judges somehow my beautiful intentions.

The olympics seem still to linger in the air, nicely, but that they were there at all is a troublesome thought. I don't want to be leaving so open to chance sensitivities close to the heart,
but it's precicely the sensitivity that's picking up all the noise that we want to talk directly.

Gears part 2

In the shower today I altranately wobbled and tensed my thighs, which seems full enough of possibilities to serve as theme for a new sport similar in kind to the type requested in part one. Have I not seen this exact behavior in bodybuilders? So step one could be to modify body-building to focus more on body resonances than their static correlates, shape and size.

I tried supplying my thighs with impulses timed to excite the wobble resonance, but wasn't able to yet. that would be something to see though, wouldn't it-- a slowly building wobble, seemingly arising from the void, but really coming from precise micro twitches deep in the heart of the muscle.

split mind another way

A recent hobby of mine developed in social settings when the groups' talk split into several smaller conversations, I try following all of them. I've not yet an active role in any once the game gets started, but I try to at least remain aware of my participation in each, mostly entailing knowing glances, (How knowing the glances are I have no idea: a newly-this-second concieved hobby is watching a friend with my older hobby's face at work while remaining firmly embedded in a single sub-conversation.) and posture. Especially interesting to me are the moments of splitting and of other uncertain or dual structure. The hobbyist tries staying in that moment's form, dragging it out with split attention, slow and dragging, but in particulars, often scanning very rapidly for particulars.

And speaking of the game's glances, I notice playing at it often gives me the defocused face that I love so much in others. I wonder then if it's the clue leading me on to new interests and that the story of my development could be abstracted as the search for glazed eyes. I'd rather not except as yet another idea among many to have fun in the mean-time.

Though the empty cages of the abandoned zoo are still revered for the care and intelligence with which they were laid out by the ancients and often attract stray students and adepts of the silver age, they're now the regular domain of the caretakers of the vast herbarium planted throughout the gilded lattice.

I've noticed many mechanical things about my behaviors lately that I really don't like and am trying to quit, but, however much reporting on my occasional stop by the Albany reading room to check out the latest CS bible lesson may be one, I'm still going to do it now.

the bit that stood out to me says the the world couldn't accept Jesus' righteousness, but that the earth was able to recieve the harmony his example introduced. Made me think of the trees I'd been laying under, looking up at them and really appreciating their way of doing things. at the reading room I wondered if Jesus' harmony was lost to us, but had somehow gone into the earth and communicated to the trees, and if before him, they had grown differently.

I'm interested in different people's sense of trees. Lately I've asked a few people how they see windy trees; if they see the tree movments as passive, or somehow volitional. Ezra, the first, said he always sees them as moving themselves, waving at him. for me it's a rare thing, and I have to ask for it.

So, here are two, of many, things I've been repeating lately, the tree question, and posting about CS readings. The first seems like fun to me, but the second not: stopping by the reading room I'm already wondering if it'll make something interesting to post about. I hate it, and it's a very small thing out of all the stuff I see myself doing that I hate-- just promise again to keep it in view and keep going

between gears and the transducer-myth

I just noticed that between my last post on muscle twitch speed games and a much earlier one on my guitar hero there's a memory of mine: my friend Daniel Pennypacker once got me to play a funny computer game with him. It was basically checkers, but occasionally, in order to capture an opponents piece one would have to beat them in a short physical challenge. There were several, but I only remember one clearly: producing more keystokes per unit time than the other fellow. I was very interested in that challenge in particular, and wonder now what it would be like if the challenge would go on for longer than the then-alloted 30 or 10 seconds.

by watching many competitors' fates as the time interval was lengthened we might be able to typify something about people and time. Just like I wonder how the standard footrace lengths were canonized. Perhaps we'd have a completely new crop of race winners if the lengths were all changed to others. Not too hard to count keystrokes, I don't think, so this one'll go on the to do list, but at the bottom.

Gears

I saw some olympic running out of the corner, and then the front, of my eye. It seemed some people were running much faster than others, but not going as far. Which reminded me of seeing 88 drummers playing at the same tempo by the La Brea tar pit recently, and thinking that some looked to be playing much faster than others.

I have a possibly related private problem: when running I seem to have 'gears', and I can't always get to the one I want, and can't even tell what another gear would be like, but just that there's some other way I could be doing things that's not fully accessible to me.

could we have sports where the objective isn't to move oneself fastest through space, but just to move oneself the fastest? Body music! Brings to mind an old discussion with the aforementioned Saunier: the fastest drummer -- not the most impulses per unit time, but the most sudden impulse. the drummer who doesn't need drums, but rather plays sonic booms by breaking the speed of sound at each stroke. Whips!

loop skewing

here's a picture I drew this morning just now while trying to understand loop skewing from a really obscure description. So obscure it's not even really a description, but an example that's supposed to be exactly irregular enough to exemplify every contingency that might arise in the skewing of an everyday 2d array. teaching problems have to have this quality in a way, but it's funny if you try putting everything to be taught into exactly one problem. so funny that I thought I'd like to learn loop skewing that way- seems a certain kind of efficient. But, I haven't understood it yet so the drawing is of the pre-skew traversal of the array in a usual way, showing dependencies of later assignments on prior ones. Then I got a bit frustrated and crumpled up my drawing. hopefully I'll be posting a not frustrated drawing soon-- maybe after pancakes

motorcade memories

reliving old pleasures I had a brief chat with Saunier(deerhoof@hotmail.com), through my unfurled car window adding a new twist. In our short-as-can-be talk, he mentioned the recent passing of a congressional motorcade past our chitchat stop in surprising numerical detail, bringing to mind Borges' argument for God's existence based on numerical half-certainty. Borges imagines seeing a pile (we'll get into collective nouns another day!) of less than ten but more than one (hardly a pile. we'll get into sorieties on a yet other day..) birds, and knows he's seen some whole number of birds, but can't say which one. Greg gives us a specialised version: he says there were either 4 or 6 motorcycles in the motorcade! --definitely an even number. I asked if they were riding in pairs, the simplest way I could account for his particular brand of certainty, but he assured me, no, they were in a single file.

Did he count them as they passed, and now recalls only the then-derived fact of their parity? No, he is describing now, for the first time in explicitly numeric terms, elements from his visual memory.

Ask about counting without words and you'll soon ask why is Gibson (egibson@mit.edu) mucking about with empty spools of thread and uninflated balloons when he could be riding the motorcycles of mind? I'll ask him, unless you do first, and probably in far less pejorative terms. I know physical reality has it's own charms (still reading about Joseph Cornell, I started to fit my so-far-favorite book on him into a secret hiding hole in my new cupboard. fittings and comensurate packings and cozy shapes! --I know they constitute arguments and proofs stronger than many from the more etheric varieties.), but I'm surprised to so often detect bizzare and unnamed anxieties behind the commonplaces of our scientific method. Does persisting in playing with empty spools hold in it an unexplored fear that spools full of turquoise thread would call out other number words entirely? Or that if we were to use inflated balloons, perhaps their levity would uncover a series of fractional numbers used only to count objects lighter than air? (or perhaps the counts ought to be made with imaginary numbers!) Bought a couple disposable cameras (to be color-coded tonight) in line at Grocery Outlet and photographed a close packed subset of our pantry filling purchases (including the camera packaging). not quite on the conveyor belt -- there wasn't line enough for that, but later on in the parking lot. expect photos 26 shopping sprees from now.

Lyal's intelligence doesn't quit. an example from last afternoon, after quite a workout:

Or maybe, what's a word for superficial translitteration based on letterforms instead of sounds? has this ever even been asked before? I should probably ask the OCR brain and not you, but I don't know to talk it's languge, or even enter it's time.) Maybe that language is English and I just can't test all it's words now. this would be a cheap kwanzaa gift for me: make me a convincing pair of words for this occasion. cheaper than a pair of earrings, and might it perhaps be better fitting to my ears?

imaginary bridge

Last night I checked out this week's CS reading and get this: it includes a definition of "Gods" as "supposition of sentient physicality", moving the glossary to the top of my list! in summary, define a concept by it's utmost implication (utmost being a bit foggy, but still) might make a mess of math, or might help it along. brings to mind Rylan's description of her "imaginary bridge" as a machine for calculating the value of i.

(you know, (-1)^(1/2). or maybe you don't, in which case you should call me. I'd say ask google, but it'll just tell you to ask answers.qualm who doesn't really know. today's illustration, by the way, shows google using much more conventional, and in this case useless, definition methods than Mary Baker Eddy. in my other hand, I could be less single-minded and just suggest you ask your definer about "imaginary numbers"; 'i' standing for 'imaginary' anyways. but really we're talking about definitions, and "standing for" isn't really one.)

Rylan's machine, according to her, enacts Euler's formula by making damped wiggles from step functions popping (that's her bridge, between digital and analog computation). She threw in as an aside that another way of enacting this reality would be to iterate a step forward followed by a rotation back, which I couldn't follow, but someday I'll ask --depending on who you are (define by act) you might be the first to know.

If I had the same question in front of me I'd focus on stereo. the feelings of separation and togetherness, touching, that I guess the word "bridge" starts to get right. parallel worlds put into distant communication. orthogonality making a space between worlds that can't touch. perhaps my vexation at rylan's bridge is that it connects worlds of diferent types, of wholly different character, so their touching or not comes as no surprise at all.

there's something fake about rigor

my solution is moving to the tip of my tongue but isn't even there yet. I'll ammend this post when I finally hear what I think come out of my mouth. for now I'll say 'series of similar pryings, complex pairs, quaternions, non-commutivity, non-commutivity back-formation'

Hello, while thinking of what to do I spent an idle moment selecting-highlighting this blog's title area, a common past-time. (but how idle was I really? -I'm still here) upon sudden deselection (blue-to-white flash) the white appeared defocused and beige. a repeat performance didn't dissappoint, and moreover, the new appearence persists in uniform expanses and the periphery, these two conditions summing their effects where they overlap still.

where can I see this phenomenon regarded as basic? where eye-axioms teach me me, please.

instead, searching for this post's title's enquoted fragment yeilds irrelevant descriptions of hexadecimal encoding. we asked for basic, and see anything but. math and codes surely also reflect something central about being a person, and even perhaps having an eye, but aren't body music, which is all I want to come on the radio

speaking of which, getting tired of waiting, I propose a reorganization of the electromagnetic transmissions bandwidth (pictured above, sort of): over the current commercial AM/FM bands, pack looped songs, having a known bandwidth for each transmission. Pack, not space - get it? "Song" should be held to perceptual and not linguistic or commercial standards to mean a recognizable time/pressure patterning: sing along! (here we enter into eveidence the idea of interlocking/multiple grooves on uncertainty records, also pictured above, centrally. different particulars, same record) the definition should, as it does now, melt to fill the voids the transimission system leaves it. and then set and hold a shape to work out other problems with; go on!

and as an side-note, I note: if we fix the definition of song, it automatically drags the idea of "looped" along with it to a nice new home, or halfway house at least. given enough time it probably gets the definiton of "pack" a bit soggy too, which is the best yet hoped for today

Scooped up Jessica Rylan last night from castle-2, two walks up from humble roots (pie maker's haven, among MANY other things), and toured the ville. We had fun when driving and letting the car stereo sing out, but elsewise, what happened?! stork club, top dog, pub; holes all. But what's the difference really? destructured? danger? control? exhortation! something in the swerving car helps.

ended the night turning the Nirvana tape down, in the face of some other true beauty: deer. which makes it sound like prior we were doing nothing but shouting and jumping, which may or may not be true, but I'll say that's not what I really want but quietness. start acting like it, dear

Benzoin

Bought my first essential oil directly after last posting -- Benzoin. I had a vague and pretty immediately controverted idea of what to expect of it based on reading up on occulted sense data. Seems Benzoin used to be a common concoction, some pointing to it as a primary scent-note, others calling for it in ritual practices, but I've not heard much at all of it from contemporary sources. The past masters talk led me to expect a much simpler sensation, but on first sniff it seemed to me compounded of complexities -- perhaps I'm getting tripped up on reductionist eigenvector thinking and ought to just sniff again. If I'm not willing to raise new non-orthogonal percepts to basis-status I oughtn't even start. or perhaps one part of me can drag the rest on to a new way without cooperation..perhaps even a very little part.

speaking of orthogonality, listen to this body music: poincarre says something like "space is not isotropic/uniform, but has as many dimentions as I have muscles," which is all nothing but an exhortation to try harder, so let's sniff: call the study group

Sigil Talk

While talking, I discovered I'm not saying what I mean, because the things I want to say appear before me in an unknown script-- magic sigils, composed of dances and ducking smiling profiles, besides other things I don't even know to sketch. There's a long list of questions and sorrys and thank-yous, (before you think I'm feeling bad about me, some are adressed to myself, too) but only the lowest entries are in english. I try for the middle entries, but end up with short-hand not even I can't decipher the second after. I will try again. (as soon as you call, 510 316 3404)

I realised late that I have two sadnesses, one about something and one not, but more about tenderness. and that it's hard to see both, and especially the tender one. The tender one is good, and gets me breathing right, or at least lets breathing feel like it should. I want to stay on that, upright, and send a message that I'm fine, full of love, and open for bussiness.

Alluded to briefly last post, catagories of sparkle meeting each other makes for a lovely time. "placing a piece of artificial ice in her jewel casket or dressing table where, melting among the sparkling stones, there was evoked a hint of that atmosphere of the starlit heavens over the ice-covered landscape."

Last afternoon I gave my lucky iridescent orange espresso cup it's first filling with an almost matching cantaloupe agua fresca. Two aging pieces of ice floating there had no other colors to reflect and so almost disappeared, but remained as rough spots, looking quite a bit like torn bits of cantaloupe. That cup's been with me a year and a half, mostly living with a little copper snake who used to prefer sharing the control surface of a Boss PS-2 with a tube of C5-A loctite. The cup he shared with a few stainless steel 1/4" 4-40 screws from Don Buchla's house in it whose finish I've yet to find the equal of, but stayed on the saucer-porch. Sometimes a magneton-pokemon would come over to visit with the silvery screws. But now, the cup's getting ready to travel, saying gooodbye to the friends and burrowing into a duffle bag full of softies. Last night I saw a man sitting on a stool between A.a laptop facing andB.a rock band, running Windows Media Player visualizations on the PA mix, projected onto them. I don't know how it started, but if he had first sat down at the computer to modify the "random" visualizations' abstractest there-allowed pace, he'd have been disappointed at the there-disavowal of even that simple request, then he may have swiveled a quarter revolution left leaving his right finger shortly-blindly on the trackpad, turning his head another quarter, but the whole way to the main attraction, to watch the band possessing the commonest degree and type of usefulness. Seeing the projected visualization, re-finding his projected finger, he notices his finger skate tricks in the trackpad's sensitive arena cause screen redraw blocks - black and white cake. I failed catching their shakes twice in a conventional way before I decided to bring the camera and it's stand into resonance with the shelf to amplify and substantiate the shakes. My bendy legged tripod tunes in to the vigorous vibrations quite easily; in fact, perhaps the remake of this third try calls for heightening mistuning and insensitivity
