LEGO RUINS
I've written before here about a couple ways of getting excited about things being the same size or fitting together or being commensurate, but there's still to pin down a very significant difference in orientation between them. just now I've buried my recently unearthed lego ruins into a old toy zen rock garden of my mom's. glad they fit in one another, because this allows seeing both, makes them somehow transparent. this version of commensurability relates to the segments about 'how many things can you feel?' and 'sensory combination, Jerry Hunt':
-pressing outside ezra's case and feeling the ascii keyboard keys and the uneven legs and sprung upholstery of the stool below;
-feeling several carpets on top of one another lightly, through paper and sock;
-sounds of cloth-metal, establishment of characters in combination in working on Jerry Hunt's John Dee (how many things can you hear?)

few days ago, watched Imamura Shohei's Black Rain on a consumer trinitron monitor with subtle rainbow either from a magnetization or a deformation of the mask mesh. and was thinking already of the earlier reststop when at the end is said "if a rainbow appears she'll survive" in looking at a white sky, of course, I saw one
then yesterday I saw what might have been an aura coming out of a baby's eyes, though at first I thought it was some kind of skin translucence that looked like a turquoise eye liner, but it did not stay quite stay on but lagged behind the baby's movements and looks. the third or so time I've seen something like an aura, lifetime record, always this feeling of color turquoise, violet, translucence- before it had been complete outlines

I talked to a person in my dream who was physically of a type that I know though the particulars I think I invented. how do you describe a type? my impression is that there are many more divisions and orders of regularity than we use in common. freckles! (possible investigation into classical conceptions, complexio, etc. maybe in relation to classical color terms, red/gold etc) Prediction of nipple's appearance, ?a good example because it is kept covered. surprise? surprise at someone's teeth? not sure if teeth enter into my conception of the types, but bones do certainly, one's frame.
woke up with a word from the dream in mind VESPICA, with a visual impression as a product name in bold sans somewhat compressed horizontally, though after typing it, it seems to be lacking a letter. Ezra and I share his occasional impressions that the face a word is set in will make it appear to be spelled incorrectly

Respighi's "Pini presso una catacomba" accompaniment for replacing my desk in it's home position over the indigos (it's been on the road with me). first and most naturally with Seiji Ozawa's version conducting the BSO on Deutsche Grammophon (2530 890), then listened to the same on Angel 134443 (Muti conducting Philadelphia orchestra) and Everest 3436 (Horvat conducting Zagreb philharmonic orchestra).. both a bit dumb sounding after Ozawa.. I remember two other versions I didn't have to hand, but already with these three I had a lot of fun. it's been a long time since I got into this, but mostly the records are there on the shelf: the few hits I always picked up when I saw a version cheap: Grand Canyon Suite, Holst's Planets, etc... in retrospect I must have been interested in that low range of the orchestra, and the sort of haze of recording it. maybe that's where also variations in feel is easiest for me to detect? opening of Tannhauser at Bayreuth LP, the haze of shepard's flute and a muffled cough from the audience

one technique, employed on blocks, of organizing in my room
is to think how I would do it if I were blind, and with the blindfold test and check, test and check,
to think of overall forms for blind use and to build up areas that can be used blind. still starting out!
blinds over certain drawers, a slit black cloth hands can go in easily. like the door top curtains seen in Japanese public houses I imagine. reading Nō plays, often people are walking travelling on the road, and it is said travellers who spend a night under the same tree or who share water will be friends in the next life.
Who all we forget. to renew an old excerise I didn't do enough of back when I thought of it (~8 years ago! after hearing about Disko Bob's private shrine) visualize everyone I know at a spring garden party together, making a souvenir photograph towards the end. friends of the blind, that we don't see them when they're away.
the records on the shelf are attracting my attention, how to address them. thinking of black paper pleated to form a blind surface to represent them, just to remember the little step I have taken. (? pleating machine diversion)
hopeful dreaming of certain projects given over to the domain of blindfolded work. a product developed entirely sightlessly. assembly-language-crystal formation tool, perhaps. other ideas.

courtly high guitar pinch harmonic, the kick in what Ezra reported was 7, but I only knew was in 1-1-1, mysterious patterning of the kick timbre by ramp of length commensurable with one time interval but not another, heard in echos. at home also I use only very few cables, letting them be rare for times, to make everything coming from one area or interaction. What we balled up to sleep to that night used two oscillators, but only one MarF output, to those could have been perhaps multiplexed or 'multiplexed' some way which inheres. I have certainly heard similar dispositions of the orchestra coming from one oscillator, a kick, flagolet melodies, swaying background curtains. and even the tunes and pattern which I that night dictated I have heard coming on their own from energy pushed through fm loops into lower and lower frequencies, for example.

A Second Favorite

Yesterday, after preamble (preamble is also very nice to have), I did not go past the exploratorium's 1DOF-inverted-pendulum (IP). many things can happen there. and when it was time for breaks there was a observation area below for watching other arms at it. The second favorite had it- a 2-plane-symmetric bench bench on wheels actuated by a very reducing gear train leading from a little hand crank spindle set in the top of the bench breaking the usual bench symmetry but not the extra one, leading the way like a train's stack towards the balcony over which the balancing arms show.
(first guess, second guess; preamble, favorite, second favorite. at first guess the reduction ratio was something like 1000:1)
While swinging and holding inversion I tried loosening body things, breathing, feeling my knees, as I have heard christine say about singing. Last weekend I stopped at a public park to read and watch soccer. and as I usually do I watched by finding particular players to follow, people who move in a way, either I know about, as my own, or in a way I wanted to learn about. the first one that I started to follow, green number 7 in a multi-line font (with a hooked 7, which I haven't found yet), moved in someways like me. and after a while I was watching his team mate #10 also, who had something similar. Katie Hannon showed me a place in the sidewalk that looks like Africa on her walk home from elementary school which I still try to visit. Have seen many public notices of things nobody made looking like things we see on maps (122 + 80 comments on Frank Jacobs' Strange Maps, for example). [compare to the initially-suppressed obvious question to Ezra Buchla after hearing his very direct and literal sonification of cubic map iterations: 'how come it sounds like a modem?']
Some of the nicest things I've learned since drawing cracks and fractures, leaf venations, bubbles and maps as a kid were from Cyril Stanley Smith's Search for Structure, where he explains very nicely how each line likes to meet the others at certain fixed angles which depend on the medium. In the days immediately following that lesson I saw much commercial signage with cracking letters and learned to decode the stress-relieving patterns in my own way. For those weeks our letters became mostly patterns of tense places and places where the tension could one day escape.
This morning I asked my dad "What's a process that effects islands preferentially?" and he said "what do you mean, like erosion?" so I thought he knew what I meant, as well as I did anyways, because that was exactly the sort of picture I had in mind when I asked: running bandpass convolutions on world maps data, leaving only islands and rivers, for example, and trying to imagine what physical process could do the same things, dreaming up imaginary sea water chemical reactions

just recently reading Samuel Delany interviews and literary criticism, I could see some shape of his coming to write a bit closer his own once-hidden things. and recalled wondering about his interpolation of a disgust-at-trash-eating into all The Mad Man's tasting, wondering if it was 'merely' a device, or somehow a revelation of personal world-limiting utterity ('absolution'), (and barely/nearly/lightly thinking 'what could you know about that then?' echoed in his glance at LeGuin's nail-biting in To Read The Dispossessed's "those of us...").

to my friend Eric King with whom I've often discussed the 'foggy clock', and I think often disappointed by not doing anything about it, (and to many others:) I see now- when a child is happy watching a grown up do something for themselves, privately, which the child can also approximate, bouncing a ball, hammering, stirring some batter, any number of things. the grown-up may look up and notice their audience, and call the child over and say 'here you wanna try?', and either the kid says no smiling a big smile, or allows the adult to sort of put the spoon in her hand, and the child just perfunctorily wobbles her hand a little , still not much distracted from the beatific contemplation, still smiling up at the adult, who still doesn't know whats happened
my best new years' resolution was to not burn my mouth with hot drinks and food. now I'm searching in my mind for, for example, failures on a similar time-scale, or progressively related regions. reorganization of failures on similarly sized category, and perhaps a way to see them all together

Yesterday unfiled the left-over postcards Will Sherwin made and self-addressed for me, to get me to write him while he was up in Tasajara for his last long stay. Some had a few lines I don't remember writing, one that struck me: A PERSON THINKS THEY ARE GOOD. MAYBE THEY WILL HAVE A DREAM WHERE THEIR ACTIONS, PERFORMED ON THE CLOSE SIDE OF THE LINE DIVIDING GOOD AND BAD, ARE MOCKINGLY ANALOGIZED BACK TO THEM BY ACTIONS THEY WOULD PLACE AS EVIL. (5/23/04) on most of the postcards Will had cut out things from magazines and pasted them on the picture side, or done drawings etc. This one has a pale deep sea creature with a big gaping toothy mouth, an unhinged jaw. I wonder if he did this on purpose in relation to his dreams of evil snakes. and once an arctic snake, white fur aquatic killer. and did I choose to write that particular thing on that particular card? I don't think I had so fine control in those days

went out in the middle of my shower last night to pry up a big pumice from the front yard, brought it in and suddenly solved the little thing I've been wondering how not to scratch the bathtub. I had imagined maybe a layer of dirt, but a best first solution: two folded up towels under the rock.

anyone who hasn't tried filling a small emptied toothpaste tube from a big full one should try it.
My small one is a bit plasticy (travel size aquafresh) and my big one metalllic (tom's), I think, extending the inherent difference in feeling between empty and full tubes, but maybe that because they're what I trained on. it's a bit like blowing gum bubbles in a way
